Old Oriental Town Hall Inn
The “Old Oriental Town Hall Inn” was built in 1933 under the WPA Program during the depression with the bricks from Pamlico County and the old Roper Mill. The building served several functions. It was the Town Hall upstairs and downstairs housed the first fire engine “the Becky Lou”.
The home was refurbished in 1980s and is beautifully refinished with a mantel from the Legislative building in Raleigh. A lot of the wainscoating was salvaged from the some of the historic homes in the Raleigh area. The sitting area is flanked by a beautiful fireplace and accented with a kitchen area with all the conveniences (large refrigerator/freezer, dishwasher, new oven, microwave, coffee maker and new pots and pans). There's a large screened-in back porch with a small pool table.
The large stairwell leading upstairs is accented with memorabilia from the old Fire Station. Upstairs, the beaded board walls and the wide plank flooring demonstrate the character of this truly historic home.
The blue room was the site of some interesting WWII intrigue. There is a entry to the roof that was used by the local women to spot planes during the war. Painted on the floor of the blue room and directly below the entry onto the room is the Compass Rose. To pinpoint the direction of the planes the women would look at the direction the plane was traveling, then they would look down through the hole in the roof to the Compass Rose painted on the floor. The women would call the Coast Guard with their large walkie-talkies to report on the planes and the direction they were heading.
In addition to this blue bedroom there are two other large bedrooms, two and a half baths and a sufficient amount of space for two cots to be placed for the large living area. Upstairs there is also a large sitting area, two full baths and a large deck that leads off the master bedroom area. The deck overlooks the harbor from two directions. The building immediately adjacent to the home (side by side within three feet) was built in 1898 and was the location of the original “Light Plant” for Oriental. This was the location of a large Delco Battery that ran the lights of Oriental. It was housed and operational here until 1917. In the same building immediately behind this area is the first jail for Oriental. It is said that the jail did once house a murderer before his sentencing in the New Bern Courts.
All linens and towels are included in the rental. The home is situated on a large lot that has two large Pecan trees and an unbelievable grape (green and dark purple) arbor.
